Pre-requisite

Course Description

The Basic Training Revalidation course (MITPMI-718) is a sixteen hour course designed to provide professional mariners with a refresher of basic maritime personal survival and fire prevention/firefighting skills, which fulfills the 2010 Amendments to STCW Code, as amended, training requirements as listed in CG-CVC Policy Letter No. 12-07.  Any attendee who has successfully completed this course will satisfy the minimum standard of competence in personal survival techniques and fire prevention and firefighting of Table A-VI/1-1and Table A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code, as amended, provided he or she has been previously certified per Section VI/1 of the STCW Code, as amended, and presents evidence of 1 year of service within the past 5 years to the USCG.

Pre-Requisite:  Besides the pre-requisite noted above; general good health and the physical ability to safely carry out rigorous activities during “live” fire fighting exercises.  Fire-field safety rules require all attendees to be clean shaven.  Each attendee will be required to complete a screening questionnaire prior to training.

What You Will Learn

The student who successfully completes this course will understand the use of firefighting equipment, SCBA, survival craft and other equipment normally carried aboard U.S. commercial vessels. They will also know how to react properly during maritime emergency situations and take appropriate measures to enhance his/her own survival, that of shipmates, and their vessel.

Attendees will:

  • Have knowledge of and can demonstrate donning and using an immersion suit
  • Have knowledge of and can demonstrate safely jumping from a height into the water
  • Have knowledge of and can demonstrate righting an inverted liferaft while wearing a lifejacket
  • Demonstrate swimming while wearing a lifejacket
  • Demonstrate keeping afloat without wearing a lifejacket
  • Have knowledge of and can demonstrate using portable fire extinguishers
  • Have knowledge of and can demonstrate extinguishing small fires
  • Have knowledge of and can demonstrate extinguishing extensive fires with water
  • Have knowledge of and can demonstrate extinguishing fire in a simulated engine room
  • Have knowledge of and can demonstrate extinguishing oil fire with fog applicator and spray nozzles, dry chemical powder, or foam applicators

What You Should Bring

  • Attendees will need a swimsuit
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Clothing that can be worn into the pool in addition to a swimsuit
  • Clothes that are suitable for fire fighting class
  • Closed toed shoes
  • Students to be clean shaven in order to ensure a proper seal with the self-contained breathing apparatus
