Course Description

The 70-hour course is designed to teach attendees how to administer  short / long-term assessment and care of the sick or injured. The seafarers will learn the anatomy / physiology of the human body; diagnostic procedures, basic and advanced first aid techniques, CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED), and other pertinent shipboard medical issues.

This courses satisfies the following STCW95 and CFR training requirements:

 

Persons Designated to Provide Medical Care on Board Ship.The MITAGS location  includes one day of clinical practice at a local hospital ER setting. Dress code for the hospital includes: collared shirt and tie for men; business attire blouse for women; slacks; and closed-toe shoes. Hospital safety rules require all students to provide evidence of taking a TB test within the last eleven months, and the current seasonal flu vaccination.  If required, MITAGS will provide this test and shot.

Pre-Requisite: Basic First Aid. Attendees are urged to review study material prior to the start of class.

Any applicant who has successfully completed MIATGSShipboard Medical Person-In-Charge course offered by the Maritime Advancement, Training, Education, and Safety Program through the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies and has demonstrated knowledge and skill in Emergency Medical Treatment and Continuing Shipboard Medical Care as set out in The First Aid and CPR training requirements of 46 CFR 11.205(h)(1)(ii) and (h)(2)(iii) for issuance of a merchant mariner license;  The Elementary First Aid training requirements of 46 CFR11.205(l)(3) and Section A-VI/1, paragraph 2.1.3 and Table A-VI/1-3 of the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code; The medical training requirements of 46 CFR 12.13-1; The Medical First Aid and Medical Care training requirements of Regulation VI/4, paragraphs 1 and 2 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers; The Medical First Aid training requirements of Section A-VI/4 and Table AVI/4-1 of the STCW Code; Be considered to have successfully demonstrated the competence "Organize and Manage the Provision of Medical Care On Board" of Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code; The Medical Care training requirements of Section A-VI/4 and Table A-VI/4-2 of the STCW Code.
