Course Description
This course is required by persons assigned to operate GMDSS equipment onboard a vessel. This course provides professional mariners with the basic understanding of GMDSS theory and equipment. The MITAGS Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Course is designed to provide mariners with a general overview of radio and satellite communications, procedures, and the operation of marine radio communication equipment. Additionally, it provides specific information on the use of Digital Selective Calling (DSC) features and emergency communications procedures and operations in compliance with U.S. Coast Guard and IMO requirements
This course satisfies the following STCW95 and CFR training requirements
Note: MITAGS GMDSS Course runs from Monday through Saturday on Week 1, and Monday through Thursday on Week 2.
What You Will Learn
Students who complete a two week (70 hour) course in Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems (GMDSS) offered by the Maritime Advancement, Training, Education, and Safety Program through the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies, approved by the United States Coast Guard, as outlined in Subpart C of Part 11, Title 46, Code of Federal Regulations. This course satisfies the GMDSS training requirements of 46 CFR 11.205 (n) and Table A-IV/2 of the Seafarers Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code.
