Course Description

This 2-day (14-hour) course of instruction is designed to provide an introduction to International and U.S. Environmental Protection regulations that apply to the maritime industry.

Prerequisites-This course is designed for all mariners. 

What You Will Learn

• Describe compliance requirements for the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, Oil Pollution Control Act and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA).
• Describe compliance requirements for handling hazardous material as defined in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code and under US 49 CFR 172.
• Describe compliance with international regulations for air emissions.
• Describe compliance with international regulations for garbage and waste management. 
• Describe compliance with the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA).
• Dexcribe compliance with international and US regulations regarding non-indigenous species and protection of marine mammals. 

Students who  satisfactorily completed the 14-hour course “Environmental Regulations and Permit” offered by the Maritime Advancement, Training, Education and Safety Program through the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies. This course of training covers Marine Vessel Operations and the Environment; the EPA General Permit for Commercial Vessels including application, compliance and general requirements of the EPA Vessel General Permit for commercial vessel.  Specific areas covered include requirements for permit administration, management systems necessary to assure compliance, effluent limitations, corrective actions, monitoring recordkeeping and reporting.
