Course Description
This course is required for all "Able Seafarer - Deck" upgrading to Officer In Charge of a Navigation Watch (OICNW) and Third Mate Near Coastal or Oceans on vessels 500 GT and greater. The course provides students with a basic understanding of ship stability and construction. Through this course, trainees will become conversant in ship construction and proficient in basic stability and trim theory and its practicable applications.
This course satisfies the following STCW95 and CFR training requirements:
Prerequisites-There is no prerequisite training or qualifications necessary to take this course. However trainees will benefit from prior knowledge of basic math and physics
This is the same course as "Stability Basic" taught at PMI.
What You Will Learn
Students who satisfactorily completed the 35-hour course “Ship Construction and Stability” offered by the Maritime Advancement, Training, Education and Safety Program through the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies. This course of training meets the guidelines for demonstrating knowledge, understanding and proficiency for controlling trim, stability and stress as laid out in STCW‑95 Table A-II/1 pertaining to maintaining seaworthiness of the ship (ship stability). This course has been approved by the United States Coast Guard in accordance with 46 CFR 10.901(c)(1) and 10.903(c) and satisfies the NMC Policy letter 01-02 requirements for training in Basic Stability.
