Course Description

This course is required by all Able Seamen upgrading to 500/1600/3rd Mate licenses as it satisfies the OICNW training requirements for Celestial Navigation. The course covers the most common forms of position fixing by celestial bodies. Subjects for this course include nautical astronomy, sextant, sight reductions, time of sunset, time of sunrise, and star identification.

Any applicant who has successfully completed MITAGS’ Celestial Navigation (Operational Level)(MITAGS-114) course and who presents your Certificate of Training within one year of the completion of training, will satisfy ALL the celestial navigation examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.223(d) and 11.401(d) for an increase in scope from Near Coastal to Oceans endorsement for ONE of the following:

to any deck officer credential up to Master or Mate Not More Than 500/1600 Gross Tons,

OR, to a credential as Master or Mate of Offshore Supply Vessels,

OR, to a credential as Master or Mate of Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessels;

OR, the Celestial Navigation training requirements of Section A-II/1, Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code, As Amended, for certification as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (lTC).

The practical assessments in this course will be accepted as the equivalent of the following assessments from the National Assessment Guidelines for Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code, As Amended: OICNW-1-1A, OICNW-1-1E and OICNW-1-1F. Applicants who have successfully completed MITAGS’ course need not present completed "Control Sheets" for these assessments in application for STCW certification.  The practical assessments may also be conducted outside of the approved course by any approved instructor of this course. Approved instructors are authorized to sign off on students' ''Control Sheets" for successful completion of these assessments. Applicants must present any completed control sheet completed outside of the approved course in application for STCW certification.
