Course Description
This 5-day course of instruction and simulation is designed to teach skills, proficiency, and confidence as a watch stander in a simulated Vessel Traffic System/Vessel Traffic Management environment. Attendees will practice and perform the various duties generally assigned to a center watch stander. They will be tasked and confronted with observing, analyzing, and taking action when faced with various maritime traffic events and emergencies. Additionally, attendees will experience large vessel operations from a shipboard bridge operations perspective in a simulated inland maritime commercial inland environment.
What You Will Learn
- near bank power line passage with a cruise ship at different river stages with and without traffic and moored vessels,
- executing the role of pilot advisor when working in the NOLA Vessel Traffic Center,
- the application of vessel traffic management procedures and practices in a simulated and interactive Mississippi River (New Orleans area) environment,
- and ship control and decision making in stressing and emergency situations.
Students who satisfactorily completed a nineteen hour course of instruction in Vessel Traffic Management. While acting as a pilot advisor, passages were completed under a variety of environmental, traffic and river stage conditions in a simulated Vessel Traffic Center. The United States Coast Guard certifies this program, which includes formal instruction in the application and use of the U.S. Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Management Mission, the Vessel Traffic Management Hierarchy Model, the VTS National Regulations (33 CFR Part 161), the Marine Safety Manual Vol. VI “Section K – Vessel Traffic Service”, the Decision-Making Process, Decision-Making Styles, Interpersonal Communication Skills, and Team Dynamics.
