Course Description

The Shipboard Assessor's one-day workshop is designed to familiarize the deck officer (usually a chief mate or master) with the contents of the U.S. Coast Guard's manual "Assessor's Manual for Conducting Mariner Assessments" and techniques, procedures, and practices in conducting assessments on board ship. It prepares the attendee for acting as a shipboard assessor.

Students who  participate in the 4-hour seminar “Introduction to Assessment” offered by the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies. This seminar presents the purpose and process of conducting assessments, the role of the assessor, and issues and strategies for conducting assessments, including role-playing exercises. This training is consistent with STCW-95, IMO Model Course 3.12, and NVIC 4-01, and utilizes the USCG’s Assessor Manual for Conducting Mariner Assessments.
