Course Description
This one-week course is designed to provide attendees with the foundational skills, attitudes, and knowledge to effectively develop and present quality instruction to adults. Based on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Model 6.09, the course satisfies the USCG formal course requirements for qualified instructors and designated examiners. Using the Maritime Institute's Det Norske Veritas (DNV) certified process, attendees gain practical experience in our computer lab developing course materials and in our classroom presenting lessons. Participants are expected to devote time outside of normal class hours to prepare for the next day and will have access to school computers and necessary materials. Attendees should bring a personal laptop with PowerPoint (PPT) if they have them. A short lesson on PPT development will be included.

- IMO Model Course 3.12
- IMO Model Course 1.22
- 46 CFR 10.302
- 46 CFR 10.309
- United States Coast Guard NAVIC’s 5-95 and 6-97
Pre-requisites-All maritime instructors attending this course will meet the U. S. Coast Guard competency and qualification standards for specific course(s) they will teach. All attendees will be fluent in the English language.
What You Will Learn
- Identify the ability to communicate effectively as an instructor.
- Identify the key points of psychology, learning and motivation .
- Develop the ability to synthesize, design and develop a total quality lesson.
- Develop the ability to effectively use the teaching technique and specific instructional materials for delivery of a lesson.
- Identify requirements of test administration and evaluation.
- Develop the ability to effectively manage classroom, students, and curriculum.
- Identify how cultural diversity effects instruction.
- Identify basic structures and principles of training administration.
- Identify how to handle problem students and classroom situations.
- Identify the need for training records and reports.
Students who satisfactorily completed a five-day course based on IMO Model Course 6.09, Training Course for Instructors; IMO Model Course 3.12, Assessment, Examination, and Certification of Seafarers; IMO Model Course 1.22, Ship Simulator and Bridge Teamwork; IMO Guidance on the implementation of IMO Model Courses; NASA TM: 110442 LOFT Debriefings; NASA TM 112192: Facilitating LOS Debriefings, and other resources. This course complies with the internal Quality Standards System requirements for the United States Coast Guard and Det Norske Veritas approved training institutions, as well as the intent of 46 CFR 11.302 and 11.309; and United States Coast Guard NAVIC 5-95, 6-97, 6-98, and 7-97.
