Course Description
This 2-day course provides the knowledge, understanding, and proficiency required to take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launching as outlined in the STCW code. This course is provided as part of the 500/1600 Ton Program. Open market students are welcome to attend at list prices.
This course satisfies the following STCW95 and CFR training requirements:
- CFR: Title 46 Subpart 160.035 Lifeboats for Merchant Vessels
- CFR: Title 46 Subpart 160.056 Rescue Boats
- CFR: Title 46 Subpart 160.151 SOLAS Liferafts
- CFR: Title 46 Subpart 28.270 Instruction, Drills and Safety

USCG Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular (NVIC) 3-02, Rescue Boat Proficiencies
Pre-requisites - For admission to the course, all trainees must be in good physical condition, and be capable of moderate swimming exertion. Also, within the last (5) years, they must also have completed the four basic courses covering the familiarization and basic safety training and instruction in accordance with Regulation Vl/1 of STCW 1995; OR, have accumulated at the least (1) year of sea service within a five year period since taking the Basic Safety Training courses
What You Will Learn
- competence in survival craft
- rescue boats other than fast rescue boats or lifeboats
- life-saving appliances
- take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during or after launch.
- operate a survival craft engine
- manage survivors and survival craft after abandoning ship.
- locating devices, including communication and signaling apparatus and pyrotechnics,
- how to apply first aid to survivors
- actions to take to preserve the lives of those in their charge.
The holder has met the standard of competence specified in Table A-Vl/2-1 of STCW 1995; RESTRICTED to vessels not equipped with lifeboats; AND if presented WITHIN ONE YEAR of the completion of training, the written and practical examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.10-9 for a Lifeboatman limited endorsement and the written “Survival Craft” examination requirements for service on vessels not equipped with lifeboats.”
Each trainee will be given an Assessment Check-off List (ACL) that the instructor will date and sign, upon successful completion of the required assessments.
