Course Description

This course is required for all 2nd Mates upgrading to Chief Mate/Master. This 70-hour course consists of two 5-day sessions, “Maritime Business and Law” and “Safety Management”.

Ship Management week one (CMM-SHMGT I) focuses on “Maritime Business and Law”.  Course attendees will gain knowledge and understanding of maritime business practices and maritime law necessary to operate a vessel at the management level.  An attendee will be able to demonstrate an understanding in the following areas: Certificates and Documents, International Safety Management Code (ISM), SOLAS, Seamen’s Articles of Agreement, Certification and Training of Seafarers (STCW95), Manning and Work Hours, Vacation Holidays with Pay including leave and repatriation, Catering for Crews and on Board including Accommodation regulations.                    

Ship Management week two (CMM-SHMGT II) focuses on crew training techniques, employee counseling and evaluations, safety and shipboard medical care.  Additionally, successful completion of CMM-SHMGT II replaces the company required Vessel Personnel Management course for MM&P deck officers.

Each session can be taken independently of the other, but a “70-Hour Ship Management” certificate will not be issued unless both sessions have been completed within one year of each other. Effective July 1, 2011, these courses will be combined into one, ten-day course.

This course satisfies the following STCW95 and CFR training requirements:

  • IMO Course Model 7.01 Competence 3.2 “Monitor and control compliance with legislative requirements”
  • IMO Course Model 7.01 Competence 3.5 “Organize and Manage the Crew”
  • NMC Policy Letter 04-02 “Ship Management”
  • STCW Code Table A-II/2.

Any applicant who has successfully completed MITAGS 70-Hour Ship Management course will satisfy the Ship Management training requirements for STCW certification as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (ITC).  This course also covers the Emergency Response and Emergency Preparedness training requirements per NMC Policy Letter No. 04-02.
