Course Description
The Pacific Maritime Institute is approved to conduct the following RFPNW Assessments in our Ship Simulator by an approved assessor.
This course will cover the following assesments:
- RFPNW-1-1A Steady on a new course
- RFPNW-1-1B Steer a course by gyrocompass
- RFPNW-1-1C Steer a course by magnetic compass
- RFPNW-1-2A Right (Starboard) 10
- RFPNW-1-2B Left (Port) 20
- RFPNW-1-2C Hard right (Starboard)
- RFPNW-1-2D Ease to 5
- RFPNW-1-2E Midships; or, midships the wheel
- RFPNW-1-2F Shift your rudder
- RFPNW-1-2G Meet her or, check her
- RFPNW-1-2H Steady as she goes
- RFPNW-1-2I Steer on a range
- RFPNW-1-2J Nothing to the right (Starboard)
- RFPNW-1-3B Change from hand steering to autopilot
- RFPNW-2-1A Detect and report objects in daylight
- RFPNW-2-1B Detect and report objects at night
- RFPNW-2-2A Detect and report sounds
What You Will Learn
- During the simulation exercise, the OICNW will be navigating the vessel and giving helm commands to the helmsman.
- During the assessment steering will be shifted to autopilot so the steering failure alarm assessment can be conducted.
- During the simulation exercise the six (6) alarms will be sounded at various intervals.
- During the simulation exercise the OICNW will request that the steering be switched from auto pilot to hand steering and vice versa
- During the simulation exercise, the OICNW will be navigating the vessel and giving helm commands to the helmsman.
- The simulation is equipped with a magnetic compass, gyrocompass, steering pumps, a rudder angle indicator, and steering can be switched between hand steering mode to autopilot mode.
- The relieving candidate asks permission of the OICNW to relieve the helm watch.
- The helmsman then begins the hand over process as outlined on the controls sheet.
