Course Description
The Rapid Response Investigation Team Training Program is a 5- to 7-day (depending on the needs of the customer), 35-hour course of instruction. It is designed to develop three (3) five (5) person groups into shipboard-based, roving, rapid response fire fighting teams. The teams are trained to observe, analyze, decide, and act as "front line" fire prevention teams as part of their normal day-to-day work and as part of their normally assigned duties. Team members are trained to response, in the event of a fire, within two minutes and take necessary action to control and extinguish incipient fires and communicate within the vessel's command structure. The program emphasized the integration of the RRT within the existing incident management system.
Pre-requisites-Be knowledgeable about the vessel’s layout, Versatile and willing to accept a leadership role or accept any member being in the leader position regardless of ship board position.
What You Will Learn
- Understand the rapid response team concept and it’s application to the vessel’s overall fire fighting strategies and tactics.
- Observe, analyze, decide and act on matters concerning fire prevention.
- Observe, analyze, decide and act quickly and decisively to control and extinguish an incipient fire.
- Safely function in a hazardous environment wearing minimal personal protective equipment
- Don and correctly use the RRT’s Personal Protective Equipment
- Develop pre-fire plans including fire prevention goals and strategies and tactics to carry out the plans in the event of fire.
- Recognize flashover and back draft situations and take appropriate protective action(s).
- Identify, secure and operate any and all portable fire extinguishers available aboard the vessel.
- Locate and operate the types of fixed systems on board the vessel.
- Locate and manage and direct passengers from the hazard area.
Students who successfully completed a thirty-six (36) hour course in Rapid Response Investigation offered by the Maritime Advancement, Training, Education and Safety Program through the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies and has demonstrated knowledge and skill in the proper procedures for investigating potential fire hazards and, in the event of a fire, responding appropriately to communicate within vessel command structure , control, and extinguish the fire.
