Course Description
This 10-day, 70-hour course of instruction is designed to provide entry level Engine Deptartment personnel with the knowledge and understanding of the subjects covered in USCG QMED exams. QMED General, QMED Oiler, and QMED Fireman/Watertender are covered.
Required topic listed under CRF 46 Part 12. Subpart 12.15-19 paragraph (b) (1) include knowledge in the use of hand tools and measuring instruments, firefighting, piping systems, safety precautions, combustible fuels, boilers, electrical safety and theory, engine room auxiliaries, damage control, pollution laws and regulations, ship construction, principles of refrigeration, hydraulics, filters and strainers, motor plants, pneumatics, pumps, steering gear, deck machinery, and air compressors.
Unlicensed Engine Department members must have a minimum of 180 days of service as a wiper or equivalent to qualify for any QMED rating.
