Course Description
This 5-day course is designed for seafarers responsible for providing immediate first aid to ship’s personnel and to assist the Ship’s Medical Person-in-Charge with providing definitive medical care. Attendees will learn and develop skills needed to recognize and assist in medical emergencies, promote the methods needed to maintain the well- being and safety of ship's personnel, conduct patient assessments and other essential ship board medical procedures.
This course is established using guidelines provided by the International Maritime Organization, Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers Code (STCW95).
This course satisfies the following STCW95 and CFR medical training requirements:
- Section A-VI/1, and Table A-VI/1-3 - BST Elementary First Aid.
- Section A-VI/4 and Table A-VI/4-1 Medical Care Provider.
- 46 CFR 11.205(e) - First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Formerly 46CFR 10.205 (h)
What You Will Learn
- Application of Emergency Medical Services
- Maintaining the Well-Being and Safety of the Care Provider.
- Recognizing and Managing Respiratory Emergencies.
- Conducting Patient Assessment.
- Communicating with Radio Medical Advisory Services.
- Managing Medical and Behavioral Emergencies including the use of Basic Life Support and Principles of Pharmacology.
- Immediate Response to Bleeding, Burns, Effects of Cold, Musclo-Skeletal and Spinal Injuries
- CPR and AED use.
What You Should Bring
- Comfortable clothes( for giving CPR)
- Closed toed shoes
Attendees who successfully complete the course of instruction provided by the Maritime Advancement, Training, Education and Safety Program through the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies and has demonstrated the knowledge and skills in Shipboard Medical Care Provider necessary to satisfy the requirements of the STCW 95 Regulation VI/4, paragraph 1; STCW 95 Code, Section A-VI/4, paragraph 1, 2 and 3; and Table A-VI/4-1 “Specifications of Minimum Standards of Proficiency in Medical First Aid.” This course also satisfies the requirements of 46 CFR Chapter 1, Section 10.205 (h)(1)(ii) or (iii) and (2)(ii), (iii) or (iv) and STCW 95 Regulation VI/1, Code Section A-VI/1 paragraphs 1 and 2 and Table A-VI/1-3, “Specifications of minimum standard of competence in elementary first aid.”
