Course Description
This 8-hour course provides seafarers with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide immediate life-saving first aid until the arrival of first–aiders of greater training. This module is one of the four elements ( first aid CPR, fire-fighting, personal survival, personal and social responsibility) necessary for STCW95 Basic Safety Training (BST). BST is required for all mariners with safety or emergency duties sailing on vessels 200 GRT tons or greater on near coastal or ocean voyages. Please refer to STCW95 BST.
This course satisfies the following STCW95 and CFR training requirements:
- Section A-VI/1, and Table A-VI/1-3 - BST Elementary First Aid
- 46 CFR 11.202(b)(3) - (BST First Aid)
- 46 CFR 11.205(e) - First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Original License
This course can be taught at company locations or combined with other courses.
What You Will Learn
Through classroom lecture and use of an anatomical mannequin suitable for performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the student will demonstrate:
- Basic life support (CPR) for an adult victim
- Proper use of an AED
- Initial treatment for severe bleeding
- Initial treatment for severe burns
- Basic patient transport
What You Should Bring
- Clothes that allow the student to move around
- Closed toed shoes
Successful completion of the 8-hour First Aid and CPR course of instruction ensures that the student has demonstrated the knowledge and skills in Elementary First Aid necessary to satisfy the training requirements of Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-3 of the STCW Code and 46 CFR 11.202(b)(3); AND If presented within one year of the date of training, the First Aid & CPR training requirements of 46 CFR 11.205(e)(l)(ii) and 11.205(e)(2)(iii) for original issuance of a license.
