Course Description
Communication Workshop
The primary objective of this 1-Day training session is to provide Mates and Masters with practical knowledge and techniques to assist and enhance their ability to communicate during tug/barge handling evolutions.
The course will be classroom-based and focused on the importance of a Pre-Maneuvering Conference, Command Nomenclature and Usage, and Positive Communication Techniques to reduce the likelihood of miscommunication during critical vessel handling maneuvers.
Tug / Barge Handling Workshop
Following the Communication Workshop, trainees will be given an opportunity to practice tug / barge handling via remote command during realistic maneuvering scenarios in three integrated simulators.
The trainees will rotate between the following locations:
- Mate in pilothouse of notched tug
- Mate in pilothouse of assist tug
- Captain on barge directing the maneuver
Simulated scenarios will include:
- Negotiating a turn in a restricted channel with current
- Docking a loaded fuel barge between moored vessels
- Maneuvering alongside with various environmental situations
